About Haki Yetu

A dedication to constitutional democracy and accessible civic education.

In Honour of Mugambi Kiai

Haki Yetu — Our Rights is dedicated to the memory of Mugambi Kiai — a Kenyan human rights lawyer, journalist, and principled advocate for constitutional democracy. Over nearly three decades, he played a significant role in strengthening civic space, defending freedom of expression, and advancing accountability in public life.

His work spanned Kenya's reform movement and extended across Eastern Africa, most recently serving as Regional Director at ARTICLE 19. He also contributed to the broader human rights ecosystem through roles and collaborations with institutions including Open Society Foundations and the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

"Mugambi believed that democracy depends not only on laws and institutions, but on informed citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities. This platform reflects that conviction: that the Constitution belongs to the people, and that accessible knowledge is a form of democratic defence."
